Happy New Year Y’All

Hello Readers,

I haven’t posted in a while. I am in the middle of writing a feature length article about the GE wheat trials that are taking place in Horsham, Victoria. The Office of the Gene Technology Regulator publishes an online map of GE field trial sites in Australia here: http://www.ogtr.gov.au/internet/ogtr/publishing.nsf/content/map

I have also been busy trying to wrap my head around the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). Civil Eats has a great explainer about that here: http://civileats.com/2014/01/21/how-will-the-tpp-affect-the-food-system/ and The Global Mail have a great audio piece by journalist Michael Safi here : http://www.theglobalmail.org/feature/whos-afraid-of-the-tpp/752/

2014 is going to be an interesting year in food politics. February will see the Marsh vs Baxter trial in the Perth Supreme Court- the outcome of this case could influence the future of GM crops in this country.

Stay tuned,

Sarah Coles

I spend more time with you than anyone in my life: A Day at the Tofu Shop.

I put one sixth of a red onion onto the corner of my chopping board to remind me how to chop the whole bucket. To be consistent.  I had a chopstick in my mouth with the end under my tongue because a Chinese kitchenhand called Shirley once told me this stopped onion tears.  There were tears but they weren’t onion related. So there I was chopping and looking at my reference point onion when I realised I had done what Louie used to do. When he was teaching me to be a chef he used to cut an example and then put it in the corner of my chopping board. I used to get so shitty at him always at me to sharpen my knife. Wear the proper uniform. Change the water in the beanshoots. Cut the spring onion like this not that. Don’t forget about the pressure cooker. Never boil the tofu. Always leave a bit of water in the pasta and don’t bother putting oil in the water because thats a bunch of bullshit. Learn to do a kickflip. F**k my friend Declan. Don’t be in love with someone if they treat you like shit. Make homebrew. Focus.
A typical exchange:
Louie: You’re making too many mistakes. I can tell when your brain is least workative.
Me: There’s no such word as workative.
Sean (bent over the cauldron making tofu): Stop fighting you two.
Me: Shut up Sean.
Louie: Yeah shut up Sean.

Le Monde Salon Monsanto

The World According to Monsanto, a 2008 doco by Marie-Monique Robin, investigates the biotech company Monsanto- examining the use of genetically modified seed, bovine growth hormone, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and Agent Orange. The film looks at Monsanto’s carnage in the United States, Canada, India, Mexico, Paraguay, the UK and France.  The doco examines how Monsanto has come to dominate the world food supply through dodgy pressure tactics and the suppression and manipulation of scientific data. It doesn’t shy from the fact that Monsanto colludes with government- here is a link to some shocking footage from the doco of George Bush Snr touring the Monsanto facility.:
